This note trains students to treat valuation as an assumption map rather than a single final number.
Research Note
Discount-Rate Sensitivity In Valuation
A note on why valuation conclusions can change sharply when the discount rate, growth rate, or terminal assumptions move.
Which assumption drives the valuation most: near-term cash flow, terminal growth, discount rate, margin, or reinvestment?
Build base, cautious, and stress cases. Then vary one assumption at a time and show how much the value estimate changes.
For long-duration cash flows, discount-rate and terminal assumptions often dominate the value estimate.
Sensitivity tables are not proof. They show fragility and help students identify which assumptions deserve the most evidence.
Plot valuation against discount-rate changes. A steep curve means small macro or risk-premium changes can matter a lot.
