The same final return can feel very different if one path has a deep drawdown, slow recovery, and high leverage pressure.
Research Note
Drawdown, Recovery, And Student Risk Reading
A research-literacy note on why final return hides the path risk students need to understand.
What does the path reveal that a simple start-to-end return hides?
Measure peak-to-trough loss, recovery time, volatility during the decline, liquidity during the trough, and whether leverage would force selling.
Drawdown turns risk into a path. A strategy can look fine at the end and still be unusable for students, funds, or firms that cannot survive the interim loss.
Drawdown depends on the sample window. Excluding crisis periods can make risk look calmer than reality.
Use the Drawdown lens beside price. The most important moment is often not the final price but the maximum stress along the way.
