Students often treat volume as proof that a market is easy to trade. This note separates participation from depth, spread, resilience, and price impact.
Research Note
Liquidity And Volume During Stress
A research-literacy note explaining why high trading volume can coexist with poor liquidity during market stress.
When volume rises sharply, does that mean liquidity improved, or can it signal forced trading and thinner depth?
Compare volume with bid-ask spread, depth, volatility, price gaps, and recovery after large trades. Do not use volume alone.
A stress regime may show high volume because many participants are adjusting risk at once, while actual liquidity worsens.
Order-book data, trade classification, and venue differences can change the reading. Public data may show only a partial view.
In the visualizer, use the Volume and Liquidity lenses together. If volume rises while liquidity falls, the student should investigate stress rather than assume healthy participation.
